| Background | The Advanced Glycosylation End product-specific Receptor (AGER, commonly known as RAGE) is a pattern recognition receptor belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily that binds advanced glycation end products (AGEs). It is expressed in endothelial cells, monocytes, neurons, and smooth muscle, and is highly abundant during development before declining in adulthood. Elevated AGER expression is implicated in diabetic complications—including vasculopathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy—as well as Alzheimer’s disease, where it interacts with amyloid-beta to promote oxidative stress and cellular dysfunction. |
