Background	As a member of the mucin family, MUC16 (also known as CA125) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein characterized by a large extracellular domain with tandem repeats, a transmembrane domain, and a short cytoplasmic tail. It functions as a component of the mucosal barrier and participates in epithelial protection and immune modulation. Frequently overexpressed in ovarian carcinomas, MUC16 promotes tumor progression by facilitating cell proliferation and inhibiting immune surveillance. Its cytoplasmic tail interacts with signaling molecules such as β-catenin and Src family kinases, potentially contributing to oncogenic pathways. Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms, though their distinct functional roles remain to be fully characterized.
