| Background | Salmonella belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family and consists of Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, flagellated (motile) bacilli. The bacteria express three major surface antigens: the H (flagellar) antigen existing in phase 1 and phase 2, the O (somatic) antigen which forms part of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) moiety, and the Vi (capsular) antigen, known as K antigen in other Enterobacteriaceae. Additionally, Salmonella produces LPS endotoxin, a hallmark of Gram-negative bacteria. This LPS is structurally composed of three components: the O-polysaccharide (O antigen), the R core, and the inner Lipid A, which is responsible for endotoxic activity. Lipid A triggers fever and activates complement, kinin, and coagulation cascades. |
