| Background | KL-6 is Krebs Von den Lungen-6: the salivary liquefaction glycoconjugate antigen. KL-6 is an epithelial mucin 1 (MUC1) classified as Cluster9 and is expressed on the surface of type II alveolar epithelial cells. It is only minimally expressed in normal lung tissues and terminal fine bronchial epithelial cells, and is enhanced in degenerating type II alveolar epithelial cells. |
