| Background | Ferritin is a widespread iron storage protein with a nano-sized hydrated iron oxide core and a cage-like structure of the protein shell. Ferritin is a protein containing 20% iron. Normally, it is present in almost all body tissues especially in liver cells and reticuloendothelial cells as iron reserves. Trace amounts of serum ferritin reflect normal iron stores. Testing for serum ferritin is an important basis for the diagnosis of iron deficiency anaemia. |
