| Background | Haemoglobin, abbreviated as HGB or Hb, is the special protein that transports oxygen within red blood cells and is the protein that gives blood its red colour, consisting of pearlin and haemoglobin, the pearlin part of which is a tetramer made up of two different pairs of pearlin chains (alpha and beta chains). The international system of units is now mostly used, based on how many grams of haemoglobin there are per litre (1,000 ml) of blood. The value of haemoglobin is similar to that of red blood cells, and the clinical significance of elevated and decreased haemoglobin can be seen in the elevated and decreased red blood cells. |
